Well known local photographer, graphic artist, singer and baker Sharon Garner is the Featured Artist for the month of May at the Artists’ Co-op of Mendocino.
In March she wrote: “I’ve been posting an image a day for the month of March as part of a fundraising effort for the American Cancer Society. These images will be included in my May show which I already know will be called, “Gratitude”. I raised quite a bit more than the goal that they set for me, so I’m quite thrilled about paying it forward. If you’ve not seen my Facebook timeline, the 30 images are all there. Tonight will be my last one. Each image takes hours to “edit and create”. They are all art and not just photos!” Sharon Garner came to the North Coast in 1995 after closing her bakery, The Grainful Bread in San Rafael, CA. She first made her home in Mendocino, moving to Elk where she met and married her husband Stephen Garner. Already an accomplished baker and vocalist, she gathered new skills in graphic design and photography. She currently sings with Magnolia, Lounge Noir, The Young Lions and the Cougar, at many local venues.
Sharon’s exquisite flower photography was her trademark for years, set against an elegant black ground. Sharon now uses special lens techniques to render flowers that seem to dance on clouds of color. Techniques include Scanography, the vintage Helios 44-2 lens, Lensbabies, the Lighted and digital editing skills. In July she will begin teaching a three-part series of courses on the Art of Scanography through camversation.uk.
Beyond technique she is guided by a deep appreciation for her subjects. She sees with the eyes of an artist and her gratitude runs deep in her approach to life as well, knowing that each day is important and in giving we receive. To quote Sharon about how she sees her subjects, “Everything in nature has a voice and a personality. It just takes us to quiet our minds, be still and listen. Nature will show you who she is and what she wants to say”.
