The Cyanotype process was discovered in the 1840s, and is a great way to combine the soothing blue of the Mendocino coast ocean with the rich history of this place, while making art by hand from your favorite Mendocino memories.
This isn’t a structured workshop — just drop in anytime and make prints by hand from photos in your smart phone, or stencils, drawings or objects provided by the studio. The studio will provide all necessary materials and expertly guide you through the process — ANYONE can make Cyanotype art.
This “Drop into the Blue” Art In Action event will be held in the Stevenson Studio off of our studio courtyard. Shane will be available to take payment on the spot, charging by the size of print you would like to make and then will guide you through this process using a photo from your phone.
This event will be facilitated by Cyan Art Studio, which is dedicated to making beautiful blue prints using the Cyanotype photo process from the 1840s. You can make prints by hand from photos in your smart phone, stencils, drawings and objects. The studio will provide all necessary materials and guide you through the process. It’s quick, easy, and ANYONE can do it. Check out our Facebook Page and Instagram pages for lots more videos, photos, music and very very blue prints…
Some people have had questions about what this event is like. Here are the answers to those questions:
Q: How does it work?
A: Drop in to the studio ANY time between the posted open hours, admire the dozens of cyanotype prints on the walls. I’ll explain to you briefly what a cyanotype is, and you can watch me make one, or watch me help another customer make one, or make one yourself.
Q: Is it a workshop?
A: Not really, it’s more of a “drop-in” kind of activity. It only takes about 15-30 minutes to make each print, if you decide to make any. I do plan to offer more formal 2-3 hour workshops soon, but this is just a drop-in “See What It Is” event. But you can ALSO go home with an actual hand-made piece of art, for about the price of a meal.
Q: Do I need to stay there for a few hours?
A: No, there’s absolutely no commitment. You can just come in, look around and leave if you want. If it’s not your cup of tea, no problem. Just please tell your friends who might like it to come check it out.
Q: Is it free? How much does it cost?
A: Coming into this event is absolutely free. Some people have come in just to enjoy the thrill of watching me or someone else develop a cyanotype print. It’s very satisfying! If you decide to make a print, you pay per print.
5×7 inch – $10 each
8×10 inch – $20 each
Bigger sizes are possible, but require another day for the process, which can be arranged.
Q: Do I need to bring anything?
A: Nope. I have all the materials and equipment needed.
Q: Do I need to have some art experience?
A: Nope. ANYONE can make a cyanotype print. Yes YOU!
