Susan Schaefer Bernardo is an award-winning poet and children’s book author whose poems have been published in Spirit of Place Anthology of Mendocino Women Poets, California Quarterly, All We Can Hold, and The Cancer Poetry Project 2.
She just published her first collection of poetry, entitled Water Bearer, which she is debuting here today!
Bernardo is the author of Inspired, a young adult novel about an apprentice muse. She has also written and published four books for young children, including Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs, The Artist Who Loved Cats, The Big Adventures of Tiny House, and The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm, a collaboration with actor LeVar Burton to help families coping with trauma. The Rhino book was sent on a rocket to the International Space Station and read aloud by astronaut Kate Rubins for Storytime from Space! Book in Space! It was also read aloud by Michelle Obama to military kids when she was the First Lady.
She lives in Gualala with her partner Kevin, two dogs, two cats, and an undetermined number of banana slugs, newts, deer, birds, trees and other wild things. You can find her rambling on the beach and through the redwoods, talking to the waves and trees, and dreaming up new ways to express her self with driftwood and rocks and paint and movement and words.
The proceeds from all of her book sales at Third Thursday will be donated to South Coast Children’s Daycare in Point Arena.
The Record serves food and drinks! We have a stage and a public venue. So grateful for Paul and Kim for inviting Third Thursday Poetry & Jazz into their new community gathering pub — and they have chairs!
Third Thursday Poetry & Jazz is supported by The Third Thursday Poetry Group. Poets & Writers, Inc. has lost its small grant funding, so we are open to donations. Please contact blake@arenatechcenter.org to donate.
