Mike Foster
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Foster recently received the People’s Choice Award in Edgewater’s juried show Favorites. He creates sculptures and furniture from salvaged metals, including discarded automotive parts, tools, flatware, hardware, gears, chains, bolts, and other materials that might otherwise be headed for the landfill.
Raised on California’s Central Coast by a physics professor and a textile artist, Foster brings together creativity, conservation, and hands-on ingenuity. After learning to weld while restoring an old Jeep, he began transforming obsolete metal objects into playful, unexpected works of art.
“I find a lot of my inspiration in nature,” Foster says. “I love animals, and trying to capture the spirit of an endangered white rhino or the tranquility of a swimming sea turtle with miscellaneous metal gears and hardware is a challenge that I enjoy taking on.”
Through welding, forging, cutting, bending, grinding, and careful assembly, Foster gives new life to durable but discarded materials, inviting viewers to reconsider what is useful, beautiful, and worth saving.
Graphite artist Arlette Ramphal
Trained as a medical illustrator, Ramphal brings exceptional precision, sensitivity, and care to her work. Her background in biology and medical illustration informs her close attention to form and structure, while her fine art practice adds warmth, atmosphere, and personal expression.
“I started to draw as soon as I could pick up a crayon,” Ramphal recalls. That early passion led her to study both science and studio art, eventually earning a master’s degree in medical illustration before becoming an independent artist.
Working in colored pencil, pastel, and graphite, Ramphal creates drawings marked by technical skill and expressive depth. Throughout June, she will also accept commissions for custom graphite portraits drawn from personal photographs.
Contact Edgewater Gallery for more information about commissioning a portrait or to be connected with the artist.
