Art Center Ukiah, August 2026 “Portals”
Articles by Laura Fogg
‘Portals’ is the theme of the upcoming August art show at Art Center Ukiah. Knowing that a lot of folks, both artists and non-artists alike, have a fascination with windows, doors and gates, show coordinator Katie Gibbs expects this to be an event with a high level of participation.
Gibbs, who helped write the call, explains, “I’m always interested in architecture, and it’s fascinating to see what people do with their front doors. Doors are an obvious interpretation of the theme, but there are a variety of ways to look at portals. They are certainly the physical openings through which we enter or view another space, but they can also be mystical, magical or philosophical… and maybe even be the entryway to an unseen realm. Some portals are bright and new; others from times past are beat up and worn with age. Some are created by nature, and others exist only in our imaginations.”
“I’m planning on making a piece with ground squirrels in their apartment house under a tree,” Gibbs continues. “Their holes are the portals to where they live, and I’d like to do something different since there tends to be quite a lot of art that depicts human-made doors and windows.”
Art in the ‘Portals’ show is expected to encompass a variety of media, incorporating all kinds of paint, paper, textiles and maybe even sculptural materials. Any technique and any size, both two- and three-dimensional, is encouraged.
The First Friday opening celebration for all of these shows will be on August 7th from 5-8pm, with music by Chris Gibson and Char Jacobs. The Corner Gallery and Art Center Ukiah are located at 201 S State Street in Ukiah.
Corner Gallery Front Windows, August 2026 “Threadlines”
Local artist Holly Brackmann will exhibit her ‘Threadlines,’ series in the front windows of the Corner Gallery. A collection of twelve contemporary art embroideries and collages, the pieces were created from repurposed antique linen, fabric scraps and heirloom family photos transferred to fabric. The pieces were then embellished with hand-embroidered poetry and prose. These small-sized pieces offer the viewer an overall impression, then an intimate reflection while looking more closely at the stitching and pondering the text.
Brackmann created this series over the course of a year. “I was enrolled in an online class taught by a French couture embroiderer,” she explains. “Each month the students from all over the world received a subject prompt from the instructor, which we would respond to through the use of embroidery. The class was more about the thought process than any special technique.” Brackmann responded to each of the prompts and created a dozen original images with the addition of prose or a poem that she hand embroidered onto the linen background. Her chosen quotes ranged from Maya Angelou to Mark Twain to her own personal writing.
The First Friday opening celebration of both the Art Center Ukiah and the Corner Gallery shows will be on August 7th from 5-8pm. Live music will be presented throughout the evening by Chris Gibson and Char Jacobs. The gallery is located at 201 S State Street in Ukiah.
