Mendocino Refuge book wins first place writing and design awards
Mendocino Refuge: Lake Leonard & Reeves Canyon has been honored with several first place awards this fall. The International Firebird Book Awards chose it as the top book in the category of Western non-fiction. It also earned first place awards in two design categories, one for its cover and the other for its interior. Each submission is reviewed by two members of a 27-member award jury who focus on the quality of the book’s writing and production.
“I was extremely fortunate to work with Colored Horse Studios and its owner, designer Theresa Whitehill,” says Brovarney. “With her incredible eye and keen perception, she created the book’s captivating look. The design beautifully complements the written history. Theresa masterfully handled the 200 historic and contemporary images that grace the book.”
Kirkus calls the book by writer and historian Dot Brovarney, “a captivating homage to a wilderness sanctuary marked, but not spoiled, by human presence.” The rugged canyon and natural lake sit west of Redwood Valley and Highway 101 between Ukiah and Willits.
Mendocino Refuge is sold in Mendocino County bookstores and museum shops inland and on the coast. A complete list is available at www.mendocinorefuge.com
